Social media and digital technologies have changed our lives and there is no indication that things will slow down. As Muslims, we believe that Islam contains the most perfect guidance for all of mankind to follow. How do we implement that timeless advice in our unprecedented times? That is the focus of the Fiqh of Social Media. "I am grateful and appreciative of my friend, Omar Usman, for exhausting available resources; Islamic, psychological, secular, and business, to develop the work you see before you. We have had long discussions pertaining to many of the topics covered in this book. I am confident that you will find this book to be beneficial, and I pray that it inspires more contributions on this topic." -Shaykh AbdulNasir Jangda, Qalam Institute "With the time we spend on social media, being mindful of how we use it is crucial. This is a wonderful resource based in prophetic guidance on how to practically use social media in wise and beneficial ways." -Dr. Omar Suleiman, Yaqeen Institute "Reading Fiqh of Social Media is like sitting with your best friend from Sunday school and having an intellectual & spiritual conversation about the impact of social media on your life. Omar distills years of research, experience, and thought leadership in an easily digestible book that you can enjoy with a good cup of coffee (and your phone off!)" -Mohammed Faris, The Productive Muslim Company "Having followed Omar Usman''s extensive work on the #FiqhOfSocialMedia and attended the seminar by him in person, I''m thrilled to hear about this being released in book form. Behavioral experts often demarcate an addiction by its rendering of a person dysfunctional; it sabotages his/her career, relationships, health, or any other fundamental facet of one''s life. Therefore, considering what the digital age is undeniably crippling in our lives, I cannot overstate the importance of availing oneself this sobering critique of social media''s true costs, its pragmatic course for rehabilitation, and its showcasing of the renewed relevance of Islam''s timeless principles for self-care in the most comprehensive sense of the word." -Shaykh Mohammad Elshinawy, Mishkah University "The Prophet (s) said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say something good or keep silent." The ability to control our tongues, how we communicate with others, is an expression of our faith. Communication has evolved and changed so much that one of the primary ways many of us communicate with others is through social media; hashtags and 280 characters. This is a long-awaited work from my good friend and Hajj companion Omar Usman who has been writing, tweeting, speaking, and teaching about the Fiqh of Social Media for years. This is a valuable work providing guidance on how to use and benefit from social media in a way that conforms to our principles and values." -Shaykh Furhan Zubairi, Institute of Knowledge "Ulama of the past have written on the adaab of speech and social interaction. Connecting those guidelines with the modern world of social media has been the need of our time. May Allah reward Omar for taking this task on!" -Mufti Hussain Kamani, Qalam Institute "This is a must-read for Muslims around the globe. I can''t thank Omar enough for this work which forces Muslims to look in the mirror and answer tough questions about how social media has impacted our lives. It questions why we desire to share the most intimate aspects of our lives with strangers from around the world and provides action items to implement. These discussions need to be had within the Muslim community. We have to question how our quality of life has been impacted by the age of hyper-connectivity. Due to the fact that Social Media is the tool for creating social capital, we need to realize that speaking about the harms of constant connectivity takes a lot of courage. Thank you, Omar, for this work." -Shaykh Mikaeel Smith, Qalam Institute

Muslim Friday Prayer is a treasury of timeless advice and information to help Muslims experience the beauty of Islam through the Friday prayer. Once a week, believers gather in the masjid, wearing their best clothes and putting forward their best manners, to be reminded of all that Islam offers them; spiritual peace, intellectual enlightenment, and social dignity. In this collection of khutbahs given by Dr. Munawar Haque at the American Muslim Diversity Association in Michigan, believers are invited to reflect upon enduring topics that are relevant for all people at every stage of life: hard work, sincerity, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (SAS), pride in the deen of Islam, and most importantly, the pleasure of Allah (SWT) and success in the hereafter. The book also includes instructions for beginners on how to conduct a Jumu'ah prayer, including basic fiqh (legal rulings), advice for navigating differences of opinion and special situations, as well as tips for those who are new to giving khutbahs along with Arabic text and English translations of commonly used prayers. Written in a clear and friendly style, this book is an ideal resource for anyone establishing and conducting the Friday prayer in their community. Advance Praise for "Muslim Friday Prayer" "Comprehensive and inspirational are two words that describe the book under review. The author has skillfully discussed the essential rulings of Friday prayers and compiled one hundred of his sermons given over the years. The topics ordered alphabetically cover many areas of Muslim life, are non-controversial, and are bound to answer the questions arising in the most curious minds. The book is an excellent resource for khateebs and all others who want to know about essential topics in Muslim life. The book also offers an opportunity for personal reflections. Written in a lucid style, the beautiful collection of khutbahs is lovely, making the message conveyed easy to understand and retain. I highly recommend this book for all." - Dr. Amber Haque, Professor of Clinical Psychology, Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Doha, Qatar "[Dr. Munawar] has committed a great deal of time and effort to prepare these excellent Khutbahs. The book is a thorough collection of what Muslims need to know about a wide range of subjects. It is an excellent read for all, particularly, Muslim youth. These one hundred Khutbahs discuss a variety of essential topics that are vital to a Muslim's daily life. Early Muslims understood Islam theoretically and practically. That is why their lives reflected Islam through their every action. We need to do that as well. Non-Muslims do not read the Quran, but they read our characters and behaviors. Islam can be presented to the world as a successful way of life based on our manifestation of it as Muslims. These Khutbahs will allow us to do this and would be great to study in our weekly gatherings or group discussions. We will undoubtedly learn a lot from them." - Dr. Ramzi Mohammad, Professor at Wayne State University, Member of International Scientific Signs of Quran, Author of "A Muslim's True Life Purpose" "This is a much needed book on Jumu'ah prayer with a rich collection of Khutbahs prepared and delivered over the years by Imam Dr. Munawar Haque. The introductory chapter provides the reader with an excellent understanding of Jumu'ah itself. The ensuing khutbahs in the book are a rich mix of spiritual and contemporary socio/political issues. This book will help readers to navigate the complex issues of the world today. It will also serve as a wonderful resource for new and upcoming khatibs as well as a good reference book on Islam for every household." - Muhammad Azim, Engineer, Founding Member & Former Trustee of American Muslim Diversity Association (AMDA)

A young kleptomaniac infuses thrill into her suffocating life by using her abaya to steal lipsticks and flash men. An office worker feels empowered through sex, shunning her inhibitions but not her hijab ... until she realizes that the real veil is drawn across her desires and not her body. A British-Asian Muslim girl finds herself drawn to the jihad in Syria only to realize the real fight is inside her. A young Pakistani bride in the West asserts her identity through the hijab in her new and unfamiliar surroundings, leading to unexpected consequences. The hijab constricts as it liberates. Not just a piece of garment, it is a worldview, an emblem of the assertion of a Muslim woman's identity, and equally a symbol of oppression. Set in Pakistan and the UK, this unusual and provocative collection of short stories explores the lives of women crushed under the weight of the all-encompassing veil and those who feel sheltered by it.

This book deals with the sources of Islamic jurisprudence and their importance in deducing the religious rulings. It covers the concept of ijtihād (independent reasoning), its conditions and application and illustrates why it is a practice for experts rather than laymen. It also explains the differences in the levels of expertise of the mujtahids. In fact, there are seven distinct classifications of mujtahid. The book also covers the communication of God as Lawgiver with regard to the conduct of liable persons. It details the difference in probative value of communication based on the extent to which it binds an individual be it absolutely binding, a recommendation or mere permissibility. The reader will be able to understand the difference between fiqh (law) and Usūl al-Fiqh (methodology of law). Fiqh is the law itself whereas Usūl al-Fiqh is the methodology utilized to extract the law. The relationship between the two disciplines resembles that of the rules of grammar to a language, or of logic to philosophy. Usūl al-Fiqh in this sense provides the standard criteria for the correct deduction of the rulings of fiqh from the sources of Shari’ah (the Qur’an and Sunnah).
